Seven symptoms often linked with ovarian cancer, has beer stated by doctors as per the new research in United Kingdom, falsifying the opinion that it’s a silent killer and there are no sufficient clues till the progressed stages. As per William Hamilton, who is consultant at Bristol University, ovarian cancer can be understood easily, if we look out for these symptoms, and it is the cause for four percent of all types of cancer in women. It has the worst medical prognosis when compared to other gynecologic cancers.

Study Details on Ovarian Cancer

In the research, Hamilton along with his team members assessed 212 women who were above age of forty, by diagnosing them for ovarian cancer and equated the results with that of thousand and sixty healthy women. They all went to thirty nine different doctors’ hospitals in Devon region of UK.

The research crew evaluated the medical reports for 1 year earlier to the cancer diagnosis and also performed the same analysis for healthy women. They observed the symptoms which were complained by them and the time.

Findings of the Study on Ovarian Cancer

There were 7 symptoms often linked with ovarian cancer as below :

  1. Frequency of Urination
  2. Abdominal distension
  3. Pain in Abdomen
  4. Rectal bleeding
  5. Postmenopausal bleeding
  6. Appetite loss
  7. Bloating in Abdomen

Ovarian-Cancer2The research crew computed the predictive values for every symptom i.e., the probability that with a particular symptom the women could really suffer from ovarian cancer. They symptoms had very low predictive values which were less than 1 percent other than the abdominal distention which had 2.5 percent of predictive value.

The 2.5 percent indicated one woman among forty having that symptom will actually suffer from ovarian cancer, which is a reasonably high value as per Hamilton. It is approximately same as risk considering lung cancer with the symptoms of blood while coughing or similar to colon cancer when blood is passed rectally. When the analyzed further, they found that 3 symptoms, abdominal distension, frequency of urine and abdominal pain are observed 6 months earlier to diagnosis and very well linked with ovarian cancer.

Symptoms and Sharing of Ovarian Cancer

Women frequently use bloating to refer distension, as per Hamilton’s report. But experts consider that distension is generally progressive growth in size of abdomen and bloating is a sporadic decrease and increase. Under present U.K. policies, abdominal distension cannot be considered as a symptom which requires immediate investigation.

Bloating is more probable to exist in women having ovarian cancer in United States, when compared with other women, according to American Cancer Society. When any woman, says that she has bloating, she will be asked to undergo physical examination and also blood test (CA-125) which computes the amount of proteins in the blood of women suffering from ovarian cancer or undergo a transvaginal ultrasound test. These tests are done mostly to women with more risk considering ovarian caner, like people who have family history for the disease.
