What is Scabies?
Scabies is characterized by lesions on the skin that usually cause intensive itching on the patient. In terms of its etymology, scabies came from the Latin word scabere, which means scratch. And with continuous scratching, the body produces these lesions on the skin.
Scabies Causes
Mites are the primary cause of problem but there are also other perceived scabies causes in the body. If you are not familiar with mites, they are small parasites that cannot be seen by the naked eye. These scabies causes resemble the shape of fleas and ticks. They can easily blend with dusts and other small particles and will burrow deep into your skin. This burrowing is the reason why people feel too much itching.
And since they are parasites, they can crawl up to dirty places or be transmitted through the infected person to others. This is the reason why there is a great chance that you will see a group of people living together who may have the same problem.
Symptoms of Scabies
Symptoms of scabies would include intensive itching that also comes with rashes. In the process, blisters can also be evident on the soles and palms. These latter symptoms of scabies are generally found in babies.
The itching that a person with scabies feels is caused by allergic reactions on the skin since mites are trying to penetrate deeper on it. Generally, the intensive itching can be felt usually during night time.
Scabies is also characterized by burrows that you can be mistaken to pimples and most of all the time can be found in deep crevices of the skin such as under elbows and in between fingers. These symptoms will develop into more problematic symptoms such as impetigo and even cellulitis.
Treatment for Scabies
There are basically two types of treatment for scabies. First is the topical treatment in which you can apply some cream or oil to control the itching, kill the mites and its eggs and give relief on the infection. Examples of these medications are Permethrin, Malathion, and tea tree oil.
The next treatments for scabies are the oral treatments. This means that the patient may drink some medications in order to control the itching and to provide relief. However, the physician may need to administer this only a number of days when the problem has become very prevalent.
If you feel an intermitted intensive itching, it is better to have it check whether it is an allergy or scabies. Without proper treatment, your skin will definitely be affected and many not be pleasing to your eyes.
