New study on treatment of aortic aneurysm. Less encroaching endovascular fixing of the aortic aneurysms has positive benefits for patients and does not carry any fatal risk and can increase the patients’ life by 2 years. Aortic aneurysm is the life-threatening ballooning of the central artery of the body which could be fatal even if it is not discovered at the right time and cured.
Aortic aneurysm is the fifteenth major cause for death in United States of America. But the processes of repairing aortic aneurysms are quit risky. In fact, the surgical process for aortic aneurysm carries the biggest amount of death risk for an individual.
Standard Surgery
The standard technique for fixing aortic aneurysm is open surgery. But in last 10 years, there are number of methods and tools which were invented by surgeons for repairing aortic aneurysms by using techniques that are less encroaching which require some minute incisions in groin. The studies initially stated that though this technique for fixing aortic aneurysm using endovascular tissue repair has reduced the complications involved with open surgery and is less risky compared to it, patients will usually require another surgery or could die most likely.
The medical center head from Minneapolis, Mr. Frank A. Lederle, MD along with his team members has stated a few points from the initial results of the long term research which they conducted for comparing the open surgery with endovascular tissue repair method for aortic aneurysms. The research was done for 881 veterans who were for fit for both categories of medical procedures for fixing aortic aneurysms. One half of the patients received treatment through endovascular repair and other half of patients had their treatment through open surgery methods.
Benefits of Endovascular Tissue Repair
The good information from the study is that there were no much deaths in the group which underwent endovascular tissue repair treatment for heart surgeries. When compared to men who took open surgery methods, the people who got treatment through endovascular repair enjoyed the following benefits.
- Spent less time for treatment while undergoing endovascular treatment procedure.
- Did not suffer much blood loss unlike surgical method and did not need any blood transfusions.
- Did not need much mechanical ventilation.
- Had to spend very less number of days in hospital than surgical procedure.
- Had to spend 3 fewer days in Intensive care unit of hospital.
There were some negative aspects like exposition to more radiations since treatment was done using fluoroscopy for prolonged amount of time and they also got exposed to contrast agents that could damage kidneys. It is earlier to say that endovascular tissue is better as the study would be complete only after another 3 years. It is not possible to predict which method is best without long-term data from patients.
