It may sound unfamiliar but sleep apnea is a usual disorder found present in adults. In today’s stressful world full of financial problems at hand, a lot of people can really start suffering from a lot of sleeping problems and sleep apnea can be one of them. However, to be able to learn how to fight the problem, you must know everything there is to know about it.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is defined as the shortness of breathing by the afflicted during their sleep. The normal person who has this disorder would take breaths ten seconds after the other and can even last up to minutes. It can go as much as five of these breaths skipped in a duration of an hour of sleep which can really be disturbing.

Most often, people who suffer from this may not realize soon enough that they need to see a doctor about this condition since it is not something extraordinary to become fully aware of. Sometimes it would even be someone else who would see you sleeping to be the one to notice this irregularity in your breathing.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

There are many symptoms of sleep apnea but the three major ones would be restless sleep, loud snoring and hyper somnolence. Snoring for one is a huge sign that there is something wrong in the way the carbon dioxide and oxygen is balanced in the blood. Snoring means that the sleeper fails to properly inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide and could lead to arousals that could obstruct a good night’s sleep.

Hyper somnolence is also known as simply the problem of excessive daytime sleepiness which can gradually develop over the years with you hardly noticing it. Other symptoms would include restless sleep, headaches in the morning, impairment in memory, mood swings, weight gain and even impotence.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Treatment for sleep apnea can come in a wide variety of options which can include changes in your lifestyle while some can even go as extreme as going through surgery and oral appliances.

For the easiest treatment, you can try using a different pillow or try to sleep in a different position. This can possible prevent your breathing cessations. To lose weight is another natural cure since the obese people are the ones more prone to suffer from this disorder. And besides, proper diet and good exercise won’t just cure you of this sleep apnea but also improve your entire state of health and your quality of life.

Medicinal treatment would include the use of nasal decongestants, some antidepressants and even nasal steroid sprays. There are also some people who use the CPAP mask or also known as the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure which holds the airways to be open with some air pressure. This is a non-surgical alternative but it can really be extremely uncomfortable for some to use.

Oral appliances on the other hand can render more comfort and convenience than the CPAP mask. This is an appliance that would be placed in the mouth which will hold the tongue and put the palate up and the jaw forward.
