Refrain From Consuming Epilepsy Drug During Pregnancy

The new rules and guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Epilepsy Society clearly state that pregnant women should refrain from taking valporate drug while they are pregnant as it may have a detrimental effect on their health.

Valporate And IQ OD Children

Epilepsy-DrugThere are great chances that the drug (valporate) if used by itself or in combination with any other drug magnifies the chances of hazards at childbirth and in fact the child may even be deformed because of this. This has been researched and stated by Gary S. Gronseth, MD, vice chairman of neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

In fact the consumption of the drug during any of the stages during pregnancy has been regarded as one of the primary reason for reduced IQ. Studies have thrown light on this fact that mother who consumed valpoarte during their pregnancy had given birth to children whose IQ is nine points lower than the actual score at the age of three.

Abbot And Valporate

One of the pertinent employees and spokesperson at Abbot has stated that the drug is effective only for some pregnant ladies and not all. The hazards and the gains should be discussed by the doctors and the patients before consuming the medicines. Detailed analysis of the same should be done before consuming the drug.

Epilepsy And Pregnancy

Gronseth and his colleagues have stated that pregnancy is a great and secured state for most of the women that have epilepsy disease. This reassuring fact has encouraged many women suffering from this disorder to initiate a family. Cynthia Harden, MD, director of the epilepsy division at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine states that as it had been stated years ago that women suffering from epilepsy have magnified chances of facing dangers like premature delivery, excessive bleeding during pregnancy and severe contractions have been cleared.

Statistics

Around 500,000 women that have been classified as the potential mothers to be have different forms of epilepsy that has a distinguished characteristic as it is shown by the meandering activity in the brain. According to Harden every three women out of five that give birth to 1000 children have epilepsy.

Guidelines And Recommendations

These rules and suggestions were clearly announced at the AAN’s yearly meeting and concurrently available online in the journal called Neurology. Some of them state that women suffering from epilepsy should refrain from consuming more than one drug at a time to cure the disease. This would magnify the hazard of deformation of the child. Pregnant ladies with epilepsy should regularly get their blood examined. This is necessary as during the stages of pregnancy the reduced levels of anti-epileptic drugs present in the blood put them at higher risk. And seizure free delivery can happen as the medical doses help tremendously.

Women that want to start a family and in order to become pregnant four hundred grams of folic acid is required by the body. This helps in prevention of birth defects in the child. Smoking is a taboo while pregnancy it may greatly affect the health of the mother and the child in a detrimental manner. Chances of the child being deformed multiply and severe contractions may happen during childbirth as well.

Epilepsy Drugs May Treat Alzheimer’s

According to recent studies, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease can be cured by using drugs that are used to cure epilepsy. Researches show neurons in the brain are protected after treatment with T-type calcium-channel blockers, which are commonly used to treat epilepsy.

Scientists have established a link between Alzheimer’s and epilepsy that could lead to more effective treatment of patients with both diseases. Specialists, including academics from Aberdeen University, have discovered that a protein found in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers also plays a role in epilepsy. It has been found that to protect brain cells from old age damage and from degeneration, there is no medicine found as off now. Although, if the scientists and the doctors, put a little more effort on it and work on it a little harder, they could come up with more helpful solutions and treatments age-related neurological diseases.

Epilepsy-DrugsCalcium signaling pathways play a vital role in the survival of neurons in the brain. As the age increases, calcium homeostasis can be disrupted in the brain, which may lead to cognitive and functional decline. It therefore raises the possibility that chemicals able to modulate calcium homeostasis could protect neurons in the brain. Researchers found that the brain cells also showed an increase in viability after treatment with the calcium channel blockers over both the long term and short term.

Earlier the mechanism for the protection of these brain cells were not known to the people. With time the scientists explored the possible protective effects of blockers for T-type calcium channels.

They found that neurons showed an increase in viability after treatment with either L-type or T-type calcium channel inhibitors. Furthermore, neurons in the long-term and short-term cultures were protected, respectively, by L-type and T-type calcium channel blockers, suggesting that more than one calcium-signaling mechanism exists to regulate long- and short-term neuron survival.

The study says that this enhances the chances of using chemicals like calcium channel blockers that are are part of the calcium signaling process which guard and take care of the nerve cells in the brain, and protect these nerve cells in the brain from death.

A study has been done on a mice and notices have been made on the brain cells of the mice and how the treatment effects the mice, more so after the treatment with calcium channel blockers.

As the drug is now clinically available and well tolerated, the confirmation of its therapeutic affectivity in humans could be applied to Alzheimers in a shorter period of time than other drugs being studied.Researchers say that their data provides implications for the use of this family of anti-epileptic drugs in developing new treatments for neuronal injury, and for the need of further studies of the use of such drugs in age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

According to a study, BioMed Central’s open access journal Molecular Neurodegeneration, it was found that neurons in the brain were protected after treatment with T-type calcium-channel blockers, which are commonly used to treat epilepsy.

One of the latest discoveries has been that a new group of medicine which is a great remedy for the ailment of epilepsy may also treat the disease of Alzheimer’s and also Parkinson’s ailment. Is this not one of the great news you have heard in a long time?

The latest research clearly portrays that curing the disease by the use of T-type calcium canal blockers was initially used to treat the disease of epilepsy. This method facilitated the protection of the nerve cells that could be easily harmed or damaged by the nerve disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

alzheimers1A group of researchers have concluded that the lack of effective medicine to shield the brain cells from age harming and deteriorating disease has led to the discovery of new drugs and advanced study in this area. These studies if confirmed may lead to ground breaking results in the medical world. A new and revolutionary class of medical doses will surface that would lead to a better and a more effective manner of curing age connected neurological disorders.

Calcium boosting channel play a pivotal role in the growth and existence of neurons in the brain. As human beings age the method becomes complex and this may lead to learning and adequate functioning of the brain may decline with time.

Researchers conclude that this leads to the mushrooming of other avenues and by using calcium blockers the process manifests the growth and protection of neurons. The calcium signaling method is a great way of protecting the neurons.

One of the studies that is published in Molecular Neurodegenaration displays the consequences of the cure with calcium blockers on the cells present in the brain of the mice. One of the conclusions that researchers have zeroed on is that neurons displayed an augment in the cure with the use of calcium channel blockers over long and short term period.

Researcher Jianxin Bao, PhD, of Washington University in St. Louis in a press release stated that the studies have provided adequate data that clearly implies that the use of anti-epileptic doses in growth of recent and latest cures for neurological disorders and injuries.
